MANSFIELD — Superintendent Teresa Murphy and Principal John Nieratko are pleased to share that Jordan/Jackson Elementary School students, staff and families earlier this month participated in a students versus staff basketball game to raise money for people affected by cancer.
The Jordan/Jackson School Students Versus Staff Basketball Game was held on Thursday, June 1, at Qualters Middle School.
The game served as a fundraiser to support the fight against cancer while bringing staff, students and families together to celebrate a great year. Through ticket sales and donations, the Jordan/Jackson community raised $4,416 which will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
The event is the latest project organized under the Jordan/Jackson Ribbons of Hope initiative.
Jordan/Jackson Ribbons of Hope was started by a group of teachers and staff, under the direction of Grade 4 Teacher Chrissy Reeder, who wanted to do something to support those affected by cancer and foster a sense of community within Jordan/Jackson Elementary.
In February, Reeder together with a group of staff volunteers embarked on their first project, which involved creating colorful cancer awareness ribbons for staff members to wear on their school lanyards.
“The work we have done for J/J Ribbons of Hope thus far has been truly rewarding,” said Reeder. “I want to thank my fellow staff members who have supported this project.”
Following the success of the lanyard project, the group began weekly meetings to organize a fundraising event in support of cancer awareness. These efforts resulted in the first Jordan/Jackson School Students Versus Staff Basketball Game.
The game was a great success with over 150 students and 100 staff members participating.
During the game, approximately 100 students faced their teachers in both traditional and knockout-style basketball games while student cheerleaders, staff, and families cheered from the sidelines.
“It was a pleasure to see our school community come together for the first-ever Jordan/Jackson School Students Versus Staff Basketball game,” said Principal Nieratko. “It was a true Mansfield Community effort! We are incredibly grateful for the tremendous support from the families and enjoyed seeing the enthusiasm from the staff and students!”.”
