MANSFIELD — Superintendent Teresa Murphy and Principal Russ Booth are pleased to share that three Mansfield High School student-athletes have been honored as 2023 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients.
Mansfield High School seniors Conner Zukowski, Ryan DeGirolamo, and Drew Sacco have been selected by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation as recipients of the 2023 Scholar-Athlete Award.
The 2023 Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to scholar-athletes who have excelled on and off the football field from high schools within the chapter. Players were selected based on criteria that included academic excellence, athletic performance and leadership, and involvement in community service and extracurricular activities. Players from public, private and parochial schools can be nominated.
Zukowski, DeGirolamo, and Sacco were three out of up to 33 possible nominees that were chosen to receive this award.
“I want to congratulate all three award recipients for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Head Football Coach Mike Redding. “These students have shown incredible dedication to the Mansfield community and to the game of football.”
Conner Zukowski played quarterback and defensive back on the varsity football team. He has played four years of football and baseball during his high school career and currently serves as captain of both the varsity football team and the baseball team. Zukowski had over 3,000 passing yards in his two years as the varsity quarterback and was named Team MVP and Hockomock League MVP this year, as well as a Boston Globe and Herald All-Scholastic.
Ryan DeGirolamo played tight end and defensive end on the varsity football team. He has played four years of football, hockey and lacrosse during his high school career and currently serves as captain of both the hockey team and lacrosse team. DeGirolamo was a three-year defensive starter for the varsity football team and was one of the team’s leading tacklers for the last two years. He was previously awarded the Gold Helmet Award, presented by the Gridiron Club of Mansfield, and named a Hockomock League All-Star.
Drew Sacco played running back and defensive back on the varsity football team. He has played four years of football and lacrosse during his high school career and currently serves as captain of the lacrosse team. Sacco also served as an offensive starter for the varsity football team for the past three years. He previously earned the Tom Souza Scholar-Athlete Award, presented by the Gridiron Club for academic excellence, leadership and community service.
Mansfield High School has had 18 players selected for this award in the past 30 years. This is the first time in school history that three players have been honored in the same year.
Zukowski, DeGirolamo, and Sacco will be honored during the 48th Scholar-Athlete Banquet on Sunday, May 21 at the Boston-Newton Marriott Hotel.
“These student-athletes have served as an example for others and are extremely deserving of this recognition,” said Athletic Director Tim Selmon. “I am looking forward to each student’s future success and accomplishments both on and off the field.”
